The City of Sydney

Rebranding Glebe.

To market, to market...

Glebe is one of Sydney’s most intriguing destinations. It feels like a place where a performance is often in full swing, and where very different characters vie for centre stage. From the different residential social groups, to the student population and local businesses. The weekend visitors from around Sydney and the curious international tourists, everyone seems to add to the character of the place. Coinciding with a redesigned streetscape and infrastructure upgrade, Bang was approached to develop a whole new brand and identity for Glebe. The creative result was a theatrical new brand using characters from classic English nursery rhymes and folklore. This look and feel was applied to street banners, a website, posters, advertising, retail promotions… even postcards, badges and shopping bags.

A charming suburb to happily get lost in, the Glebe brand now presents a story with many different layers and intriguing sub-plots. Critically, relationships have been fostered between different groups, and both residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy a closer connection to Glebe and its local businesses.

Local businesses were able to get closer to the new Glebe brand with our successful ‘Shop & Win’ promotion. This encouraged shoppers back to the suburb, with a shiny new Vespa scooter to be won via a draw for every $20 purchase.

Glebe residents also built better relationships by getting involved with our ‘150 Locals’ project aimed at further binding the community together. '150 Locals' created an outdoor gallery that featured portraits of Glebe residents in local parks, cafés, restaurants and out and about on the streets.

“We were blown away by Bang’s interpretation of the brief. Their use of Victorian illustrations in their design was both humorous and engaging – it not only looks different from all other suburbs in the area, it’s also distinct from all other brands. We feel like we own a new space”.
Paul Angell, President of the Glebe Chamber of Commerce.
